The Lightning Bug philosophy

Too many companies make the mistake of producing self-indulgent adverts, aiming for the approval of their peers rather than their client's target market.

At Lightning Bug we take a pragmatic approach to our work: embed your message in accessible, compelling and unpretentious content and your audience will give you their attention.

We believe that the secret to a successful marketing campaign is not how much you spend, but how wisely you spend it.

We believe even a small business can have a big presence.

Why advertise?

Because it works.

Of course the relationship between advertising and sales is complex and not easily quantifiable, but advertising raises consumer awareness of brands, products and services and when the time comes to choose a product or service people tend to only choose between those they recognise. Although figures vary, there is a proven link between advertising and increased brand recognition, brand rating and purchase consideration; this effect has been demonstrated in consumers from the age of two upwards.

Why viral advertising?

Viral campaigns, although still regarded by many companies as an unnecessary luxury, are actually incredibly cost-effective. It has been shown that online marketing has a greater effect on brand engagement than any other advertising medium, (IAB study, 2006) and at a fraction of the cost.

A good viral pays for itself many times over.

Unlike a billboard, press or TV ad there are no residual costs, once purchased it promotes you without deterioration, indefinitely. Because the viewer has engaged willingly with the advert they also pay more attention to it than they would to an unwanted interruption to their favourite programme - which is usually their cue to leave the room. Unlike TV ads, when people watch a viral they are there and focused.

What is viral marketing?

It is not spam, spam is one of the most counter-productive uses of marketing resources, and makes people angry and mistrustful of your company.

Viral marketing, also known as digital marketing or e-marketing, is an umbrella term that describes any strategy reliant on individuals choosing to pass on a marketing message to others, causing it to spread at an exponential rate. As it is passed along a pre-existing social network, people are more receptive to it, and customers can be precisely targeted. After the initial seeding process, a successful viral campaign becomes self-sustaining.

About lightning bugs

Lightning bugs, also known as fireflies and glow worms, are a family of insects (strictly beetles) which emit phosphorescent light to communicate. They are omnivores and use their bioluminescence to attract mates or prey, usually females luring unfortunate males to their doom. Various species can be found around the world in both temperate and tropical regions, but they generally prefer warm, humid environments.

There are about 2,000 known species of lightning bug worldwide. Find out more about Lightning Bugs here.
